Event: "Addressing the Skills Gap in Biometrics" European Biometrics Training and Education Seminar

The University of Kent and UKBI, in association with the European Biometrics Forum, are holding a seminar on 26 June on training and education in Biometrics. The event will include speakers from the European Commission and experts from industry and academia. The seminar will facilitate a focused debate to consider what skills gaps exist within Biometrics in Europe, and to develop a strategy for the future. This event will also provide a platform to establish Research-Industry partnerships to pursue funding for the training and education programmes identified.

Responding to the EBF's interview with Ilkka Laitinen, Director of FRONTEX, last month, Mr Hustinx noted, "Biometrics can have great added value, but should not be seen as a silver bullet.

EBF Interview: Ilkka Laitinen, Executive Director of Frontex

Brig. Gen. Ilkka Laitinen, Executive Director of Frontex, is interviewed by Johnny Ryan, Project Manager of the European Biometrics Forum. Brig Gen Laitinen noted, "I really do not see any other solutions for the further development of travel document security than the comprehensive and systematic use of biometric features, also in terms of more automatic checks at the border". Topics covered include the entry/exit and registered traveller programmes proposed by the European Commission, the future of Frontex, BorderNetTech, and the role of biometrics.
